PAST NOTES

analog instant messages

you have found my collection of passed notes from the 90s, welcome.

spanning from the beginning of 1995 to junior year of high school in 1998, a note, reproduced verbatim from the original with the exception of all names, is posted to this blog in the order I'd received it. each post contains one note, and a brief narration of the back story as best I can remember it.

there will also be, from time to time, relevant photos, songs, videos, links, objects, quotes, diaries, poems, and other ephemera (all admittedly completely self-indulgent and wince-inducing).

1995 — THIRTY ONE

Eve,
Hey! Stoopid Suzy told me Cara told her I called her a slut. Why would I tell her you said it if I said the same thing? I told Cara to her face 4th period that she’d been acting like a slut and she had nothing to say. I never told her anything. She’s lying. And we were just kidding w/ Jim. Marcella Costa said it all anyway.
I JUST LAUGHED.
Don’t be pissed at me.
Valerie
The good old She said/She said. Seems to me that in ninth grade: Slut was an insult. By tenth grade: Slut was a term of endearment. Somewhere in the time between, all of us figured out that we wanted to be as slutty as possible, and we no longer really held that against anybody. Also, tenth grade was when I discovered Bikini Kill, if that makes any sense. My girlfriends and I became very interested in reclaiming that word for ourselves.

I love the 90s.

katiebakes:

There’s a lot of 90’s nostalgia on Tumblr today for whatever reason (maybe because the stock market is having some 90’s nostalgia of its own.)

  1. 1994.
  2. Living Single.
  3. Waterfalls.
  4. Spice Girls.

Which is funny because I was thinking about some old school 90’s songs (they’re not what you think, but they may be what you fear) last night. I think I shall post them shortly.

Please post them! We have 90’s nostalgia every day :-)

As stated here, all the names here have been changed, including mine. I can’t have anyone’s google results presenting them with this horror show. Anyhow. The name Jim was chosen for my ninth grade boyfriend because that was the name of the sneaker I wore then. This shoe box was used as storage for my old letters and cards - not folded up notes, but correspondence that was actually put through the mail. The passed notes from school were stored in a plastic piece of Tupperware, one intended for cereal, oddly. I found the container in my mother’s barn about 8 years ago, every note perfectly preserved, despite being inside of a drafty, damp and modly, cold barn through that many Upstate New York winters.

1995 — TWENTY NINE

Eve,
Hey girl how’s it goin?
Pretty good here… so hows Jim? you guys just looks so cute together. I cant wait until Halloween. Type-O baby!!! I absolutely worship Peter Steele!
But Anyway………
Guess what! I got a boy! Sorry, a man! His name is Chris … Evans. I think. I cant be sure about the last name. He’s got blonde hair, intense green eyes, he’s about a head taller than me, very , very , very , Alternative. And in my opinion, very cute. He’s really sweet. Well I’ll write more later, bells gonna ring. Bye
Lydia
W/B ASAP

Lydia had been my matchmaker with Jim. My Satan-worshiping, goth-tastic, unexpectedly sober (because she was allergic to smoking pot), Type-O-Negative loving, 4’10” and ass kicking, double-suicide-on-the-day-after-graduation-planning matchmaker. Its weird though, I never saw her again after freshman year. No idea what happened to her. I sure hope she never went through with that whole double-suicide thing. I don’t think she could have though, because the guy she had been planning to do it with has been a mall cop ever since graduation. I only know that because I’ve seen him there, in his uniform with the regulation flashlight that all mall cops come armed with. You can tell he’s totally still goth underneath, too.

Who the hell was Henry Lee Lucas, right? He was once considered America’s most prolific serial killer. I used to quote serial killers in my Hello Kitty diaries. John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson, David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy, etc. So precocious!
